Legionella Remedial Work – What is Legionella Bacteria?

Legionellosis is the collective term for diseases caused by legionella bacteria, including the most serious Legionnaires disease; this is a fatal form of pneumonia and everyone is susceptible to infection although some people are more susceptible than others –

    • People over 45 years old
    • Smokers and heavy drinkers
    • People suffering from chronic respiratory or kidney disease
    • People with diabetes, lung and heart disease
    • Anyone with an impaired immune system

People can contract Legionnaires disease by inhaling small droplets of water suspended in the air containing the bacteria. Certain conditions increase the risk.

    workplace risks

Are there risks in your workplace?

Any water system that has the right environmental conditions could potentially be a source for legionella bacteria growth.

The most common places where legionella can be found are:

    • in purpose-built water systems (eg hot and cold water systems)
    • cooling towers
    • evaporative condensers
    • spa pools

There is a reasonably foreseeable risk in your water system if:

    • Water is stored or re-circulated as part of your system.
    • Water temperature in some or all parts of the system is between 20-45°C.
    • There are sources of nutrients such as rust, sludge or organic matter.
    • It is possible for water droplets to be produced and if so can be dispersed over a large area, e.g. showers, aerosols from cooling towers.
    • If any user of the building is more susceptible to legionella due to age, illness, weak immune system etc.
